Guys gobble goatish goodies in summer
GOAT meat is renowned for its warming qualities that build up yang or hot energy, as well as its reputed efficacy as a men's tonic.
Winter is typically the season for eating goat meat because of its yang energy that dispels cold, strengthens weak constitutions and nourishes yin (cold energy) for both men and women, according to traditional Chinese medicine.
Too much hot energy in the hot summer may be harmful because it generates excessive "internal fire," which may cause nose bleeds or mouth sores.
However, goat meat in moderation and not too spicy is healthy for men and women in every season, according to Wu Yingen, a TCM master and professor at Longhua Hospital attached to the Shanghai University of TCM.
"The most important and basic principle of TCM is to foster yang in spring and summer, while nourishing yin in autumn and winter," he says. In hot sultry summer, people are likely to lose yang energy by sweating.
"So fostering enough yang energy is necessary in summer," Wu says. "Enough yang can help clear the blood vessels and inject power."
A good way to supplement yang is to eat goat meat in summer. The healthy heat caused by the goat lasts into the winter to help combat seasonal yin or cold energy, it is said.
