A garden of earthly delights
GUYI Garden was selected by the public as one of the nicest parks in Shanghai in a recent assessment of the city's green belts.
Feng Shucheng, head of Guyi Garden, said the garden has always been a popular spot.
Part of the park's success lies in its adherence to its historic roots. To celebrate the World Expo 2010 Shanghai, Jiading District renovated the garden with 20 structures created in their original ancient designs.
Bamboo is another feature of the garden. Currently, there are more than 80 species of bamboo, the most anywhere in Shanghai. No wonder the garden's Bamboo Culture Festival is such a hit with local residents.
The garden is meticulously maintained so that the footprints of two million people a year don't leave their mark on its beauty. Besides routine care for the plants, the garden is patrolled by park officers on the look out for people who litter or deface park structures.
Guyi Garden exhibits a design of unified simplicity, from the shape of litter bins to road signs and tourist information kiosks.
It boasts a variety of free services, such as an automated shoe-cleaning machine and first-aid kits.
Thirty new audio guides in a variety of languages are provided for visitors, and the garden is a barrier-free zone for the disabled.
