A look at the fringe fashions of yesteryear
FASHION and hairstyles just like history always seem to repeat itself. What was fashionable several decades ago often makes a comeback as the "next new thing."
Sifting through the Jiading Archive there is evidence that seven decades ago hair fashion was again repeating itself in an article titled "How to deal with your fringe" published in Tiebao News of December 1, 1946.
In the article a hairdresser of that time named Wei Du wrote: "The fringe which had been popular about 20 years ago is now coming in fashion."
Wei Du then recommended the best fringes to suit different facial shapes and sizes.
"There're a lot of styles for fringes. Usually girls and young ladies prefer a straight fringe, and housewives may prefer fringe with buns made of different lengths of hair. In my opinion, if your face looks regular, then the straight fringe is suitable for you," Wei Du wrote. "However, if you want to try different styles and are hesitant to cut your hair short, you can try to bind your hair in a V-form on top of your head and then comb the loose hair over you forehead to form a fringe style. Of course, a beautiful fringe must be a bit curly. You can wet your hair and roll it in for a few centimeters and then pin it. So when you loosen it, you'll get a beautiful curly fringe."
Wei Du also educated readers on the usefulness of fringes. "The most important function of the fringe is to give your face more balance, like making a thin face look fuller and rounder, or making a round face look longer. A good fringe can cover the weakness of your face. For example, if you feel your face is a little short, you can grow a long, soft fringe. It's not a difficult style. You can just roll the hair up and then comb it out."
With its many detailed illustrations, it won't be a surprise if this article one day shows up again in today's fashion magazines.
