A unique exhibition pays tribute to Jiading patriot

The Jiading District Archives hosted a calligraphy and painting exhibition in September commemorating Hu Juewen’s 130th birthday.

The 80-piece exhibition honors Jiading’s patriotic pioneer from a unique artistic perspective.

Some paintings feature bold brushstrokes, while others exhibit a delicate and gentle style, each offering a profound artistic interpretation that narrates the story of that glorious period.

“These letters and drafts of poems are witnesses to the sincere exchanges between Hu and his friends and reflect deep patriotic feelings,” Gu Jianming, a visitor, said.

“Hu started his journey in Jiading, supported the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression through industrial development, and dedicated his life to China. His spirit is worthy of learning.”

Hu was also a skilled calligrapher and poet.

His calligraphy is graceful and free-flowing, while his poems are daring and full of passion. He expressed his hopes through poetry and conveyed feelings through paintings.

The exhibition features the original copy of “Portrait of Two ‘Me’s” (a composite photo of Hu before and after shaving), the ink manuscript of “Ode to Beard-Shaving,” and 98 responsive ink works.

The materials donated by Hu’s descendants are well-preserved and serve as valuable historical relics, offering rare firsthand insights into Hu and the history of the War of Aggression.

The exhibits include a variety of genres, such as poems, ci (a classical Chinese poetic form), songs, inscriptions and paintings, showcasing all the major styles of calligraphy.

Except for “Portrait of Two ‘Me’s,” all other exhibits are being displayed to the public for the first time.
