Another factory for robots of the future

Shanghai STEP Electric Corporation, a domestic robot manufacturing company, is to build a factory in Jiading New City.
The factory, costing 693 million yuan (US$106 million), will have an area of 48,000 square meters with an annual output of around 10,000 industrial robots.
It is to make professional and specialized smart robots as well as motion control system products.
Featuring a complete streamline from design, manufacturing, testing to final installation, the factory serves to boost the production capacity and to introduce advanced test equipment to enhance quality.
According to a director with STEP Corporation, China is the largest robotic application market in the world, demanding 80,000 to 90,000 robots each year.
In the first half of this year, STEP was able to produce 1,200 robots with the existing factory running at full speed to meet demand.
Competition is fierce for domestic brands to stand out in the market.
Foreign brands now have 80 percent of the market and only three domestic brands are able to sell between 1,000 and 2,000 machines a year.
STEP is among them and striving to strengthen its competency.
“The ideal status would be making robots with robots,” said a STEP official.
“But we will keep optimizing the robots to make them easier to operate.”
