Anting now has a studio to film short micro dramas

Micro dramas have transformed the film and TV industry, and to capitalize on the boom, the Shanghai International Short Video Clips Center’s Micro Drama Filming Base has come up in Anting Town, Jiading District.

The 8,000-square-meter indoor and outdoor complex has facilitated the filming of numerous new scenes. A bustling ancient-style street with dazzling lights hosts a lively market featuring stores, a stage and inns spanning over 1,500 square meters.

The Zhuangyuan Mansion (home to the best scholar in imperial exams) has been decorated with flowers, water scenes and a courtyard. Its settings can be changed.

A 3,000-square-meter interior area is used for scenes of a battlefield with flying banners.

Sitting on the throne in the imperial royal hall will transport you back to ancient dynasties.

The imperial palace hall serves as the focal point of the indoor space, which includes numerous bedrooms, the emperor’s study, the royal kitchen and even a prison.

It achieves “changing scenes with each step” and meets most of the shooting requirements for costume plays.

“Good dramas are worth the wait, and the base fills the gap of Han (202 BC-AD 220) and Tang (AD 618-907)-style scenes in Shanghai,” said Yu Yang, the center’s general manager.

The base is separated into two parts. The outdoor area includes approximately 5,000 square meters of buildings designed in the style of the Sui (AD 581-618) and Tang dynasties, while the indoor space is fully outfitted with soft décor.

The base opened to film crews in late September.

To meet the lighting requirements, the indoor lighting has been set to a somewhat darker tone. The entire location is outfitted with a professional lighting system and a film and television power supply, supporting all-weather shooting.

Highlights include the 2,000-square-meter prop warehouse. All costume drama props, from screens and stone piers to wine vessels and silver ingots, swords and spears to palace lamps, are available here.

A 100,000-yuan (US$14,030) worth “dragon throne” and tens of thousands of other props will be brought from other places.

The prop warehouse will be divided into two floors, with large items located on the lower floor and small items on the upper floor to ensure easy access while preventing damage, Yu said.

Construction is underway to build a costume warehouse, which will serve as a “one-stop” shooting location for ancient-style short dramas when completed.

After the base is completed, it is expected to serve more than 50 film crews annually.

According to statistics, in the first half of 2025, micro-short dramas were broadcast on 26 satellite TV channels, representing an increase of 116.7 percent in the number of channels compared to the entire year of 2024.

In addition to the ancient-style base, the center will also construct a modern outdoor street for closed shooting this year, which will feature department stores, a two-lane road designated for filming, bus stops, a leisure square and a shopping plaza to enhance and diversify the outdoor shooting formats available in the park.

A professional infinity studio, covering an area of 3,000 square meters, will be constructed to comprehensively enhance the shooting experience.

The center is negotiating for a “one-day tour of the film set” and “in-depth experience of short drama shooting” with Trip.com and Anting Culture and Tourism Co.

In the next stage, the center will link more high-quality shooting locations in Jiading, such as Anting Old Street, continuously expand the brand radiation effect of Jiading’s cultural landmarks, and boost the regional high-quality cultural tourism economy development.
