Artist says Jiading is a special place
AS the Chinese Year of the Ox approaches, various bull-themed items are catching the attention of people.
Zhu Bingheng, a 69-year-old artist famous for her exquisite cattle art work, is having her paintings exhibited in Jiading.
"I like to draw oxen and most of my paintings are about cattle," says Zhu, "It's such a privilege to hold an exhibit back in my hometown at the very beginning of the Year of the Ox."
Zhu was actually born in Hunan Province, but she moved to Jiading to live with her grandmother when she was nine years old and considers it her hometown.
Since then, Zhu has set out on a decade-long journey to draw and paint cattle.
"At first I drew an ox just as it was," says Zhu. "But now the cattle in my paintings are not just some concrete animals, but symbols representing my values toward the world.
"An ox is closely associated with integrity, diligence, selflessness and fearlessness. I think the image of an ox can be recognized globally."
Zhu worships the eternal secrecy and generosity of nature, which in her opinion can be perfectly symbolized by oxen.
Although the subjects remain the same, Zhu's style always changes. According to Shou Chongde, former chief director of the Zhejiang Education Research Institute of Fine Arts, Zhu's works once consisted of subtle and safe strokes, but nowadays she uses free strokes that portray more meanings.
"People can't get the beautiful eyes of the cattle out of their mind once they see them," says Wang Guo, a poet, after his visit to Zhu's exhibit.
"The eyes of an ox are probably the friendliest in the world," Zhu says. "They are like deep, clean and clear ponds."
Twenty years ago, Zhu exhibited her art work in Jiading. It was a blast in Shanghai's art circle and she grabbed many newspaper headlines.
Zhu has remained very modest despite the attention. She has been grateful for the support and encouragement of the people in her hometown.
"My hometown is my roots and I will always come back," she says. "I sincerely hope this exhibit can be a great gift to all my folks in Jiading."
