Authentication service helping solve the problem of fakes
THE Chinese artifact market is booming but fakes are a problem.
Last May, Beijing culture authorities certified several companies as authenticating service providers. Recently, Artron Group opened its Shanghai Art Center offering such a service.
The 71-year-old buildings, formerly the workshops of Shanghai’s No. 16 Towel Factory, have been redesigned by architect Liu Yichun to preserve its industrial age heritage while also creating an artistic environment.
Artron (Shanghai) consists of centers for art book printing, design, photographing and copying, the Artron.net website office, an art book store, a display zone for artifacts, an Artron Gallery and a cafe in eight buildings in various styles.
One of the highlights is the Ding Yi building co-designed by architect Liu Yichun and artist Ding Yi.
As the art center is put into use, Artron Group kicks off a series of activities. They include a book art exhibition, an exhibition of diversified art products and services as well as a charity event to help poor children realize their artistic dreams.
All these are in addition to Artron’s authenticating services.
First the authentication service cooperates with the creator of the artifact to ensure it is genuine. Then high-resolution scanning technology is used to scan the artifact and counterfeit-proof technology produces a high-resolution authentication certificate for the collector. Information about the artifacts is added to a registration database for Chinese artifacts, which can be searched online.
Artron Group’s service targets clients such as artists, collectors, galleries and auction institutions and items including paintings and prints. By now it has collected data of works and objects from about 300 artists and 1,000 collectors.
While exhibitions and books on show are held from time to time, customers can log on to Artron’s website Artup.com. They can even select images online to customize them offline and create their own art.
