Autistic boy shows a gift for memorizing numbers
XIAO Yuan has an incredible memory.
The autistic boy, who is a grade six student at Jiading Chengjia Special School, can quickly memorize telephone numbers, car plates and irregular numbers.
Xiao can even tell immediately what day of the week is when he is given the date.
"I found he was especially interested in calendar and he would study it for hours," Xiao's grandmother said.
In May, she was surprised when Xiao told the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival which fell on September 30 this year.
"After that, I randomly picked some other dates, and he knew exactly what day it was," his grandmother said.
Xiao was diagnosed with autism when he was three years old.
When he was in grade one, he rarely spoke with his classmates. He was then sent to a training class to develop better communication skills. Gradually, Xiao learned to have some simple conversations with others.
His teacher also found the boy was good with numbers. He can recite many teachers' cell phone numbers and car plates.
In addition, during the school's flag-raising ceremony, Xiao would always notice who was absent.
At Jiading Chengjia Special School, Xiao's classmate Xiao Ke has a special ability in logic.
Xiao Ke can put together a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle within 40 minutes - most kids take half a day.
"Seeing the students grow up like those normal children makes me happy," said their teacher, who is surnamed Sun.
"I hope their potential can be further developed. When they grow up, they can stand on their own feet and earn the respect of others."
