Big boost for new energy vehicles
THE unveiling of Shanghai Zhongke Lifan Electric Vehicle Co Ltd on March 16 marked a crucial step forward by the Chinese Academy of Sciences' R&D center for electric vehicles in terms of new energy vehicle development.
The R&D center was launched last August, together with Shanghai Zhongke Shenjiang Electric Vehicle Co Ltd. Their settlement in Jiading had driven the district's industrialization of new energy vehicles.
"Zhongjiang Shenke" has now developed five models of electric vehicles. The Shanghai Public Security Bureau has booked 30 such vehicles for police patrolling. The first five will be tested by the district bureau of public security.
Electric vehicles are now in use as patrol wagons or sanitation trucks. However, high costs limit their wider use. A traditional sedan will cost around 60,000 yuan (US$8,788) while a similar electric one will cost 200,000 yuan.
