Birds flock to Liudao scenic area

Spring is a perfect time for bird watching, and the Liudao scenic area in Huating Town is one of the best spots. It’s also an important habitat for wild animals.

The area has many difference types of trees, including cedars and Alamo trees, and a thick layer of leaves cover the earth.

There are 98 species of birds to be found in the 67 hectares. Apart from local birds there are also some rare species in Shanghai.

“Birds have strong sense of territory and intruding birds are very likely to be expelled by bird groups,” wild animal protection expert Lu Wanpeng from Jiading Forestry Station said, pointing out several azure-winged magpies.

Thanks to effective protecting measures, there are now more than 30 of these birds in the territory as the habitat is seldom visited by humans and it is abundant of food source.

“Originally these birds were seldom see in Shanghai, and the growing number shows the natural environment keeps improving,” Lu said.

With the increase in the bird population, raptors such as eagles, kestrels and falcons have also settled in the habitat. Owls will also stop here on their way of migration in spring and autumn.

In August 2010 a wedge-tailed shearwater was found in the habitat due to a strong typhoon. The bird, which has a wingspan of a meter, was blown from the Pacific. “It’s the first time for the bird to appear in China’s mainland after it was discovered in Taiwan in 1916,” Lu said.

Before that there were 240 species of birds in Shanghai. Seven new species have been spotted since then.
