Building a healthy district with 'Sports for All'

MORE than 10,000 fitness enthusiasts in Jiading District embraced the first day of the new year by taking part in a run.

Shanghai's National Physical Fitness Index ranked highest in China in 2010, while Jiading's ranked the first among suburban districts.

Jiading residents reached the physical standard at a rate of 99.4 percent, 4.7 percent higher than the city average. Body mass index has been improving. The difference between urban and rural residents' physical fitness is narrowing.

The district has implemented the National Fitness Program for a number of years. "Sports for all" is the government's top priority. The government has encouraged farmers to take part in sports for a prosperous and healthy rural life.

Jiading has a large migrant population, around 930,000. The total population is 1.47 million, including only 540,000 permanent registered residents.

Sports facilities have improved in layout and functionality. The district has 22 community playgrounds and 464 fitness locations, which forms a network across towns and communities

The network provides farmers with excellent access to fitness facilities. To encourage more farmers to get healthy, Spring Festival activities have been organized, including a spring marathon, winter swimming, dragon boat racing and popular folk sports.

In the recent three years, the government has held 94 games at the district level, and carried out 409 training courses at the town's level. The major participants are migrants.
