THE Affiliate Program promoted by the Jiading government to increase the cooperation between businesses and university scientific research institutes is bearing good results.
The program aims to harness scientific ingenuity to help businesses solve difficult commercial problems. It took on 33 projects last year and to date has successfully completed half of them.
There are about 8,000 manufacturing companies in Jiading District, and many of them need upgrading but lack the capital and technical know-how to improve their production processes. That's where the Affiliate Program comes into play.
Four years ago, Shanghai Tai'an Engineering Industry Co decided to turn its research focus to waterproof coatings. The company achieved success by developing a high-strength polyurethane waterproof coating in 2008 but failed to put it into mass production because of the difficulty of the production techniques involved.
The Affiliate Program put the company in touch with experts at the Shanghai Institute of Technology, and within a year, the technical problems were solved. This year, Tai'an applied for help on another four projects.
Qingqiang CNC Machine Tool Plant and Shanghai Huilian Food Co also benefited from the program.
Collaborating with Donghua University, Qingqiang CNC Machine Tool managed to develop a five-axis milling machine and became one of the leading companies in its field.
