Caring mother-in-law’s life of selfless devotion
Jiading resident Zhang Yueying has been taking care of daughter-in-law Cao Ping for 10 years since a car accident left Cao in a persistent vegetative state.
A small bed has been set up for Cao at Zhang’s three-bedroom house.
Tiny facial expression lets Zhang know how Cao feels.
Feeding is the most difficult task. Zhang has to mince the food, and feed her through a tube in her nose. It usually takes an hour per meal.
“Sometimes I was too tired and felt too bitter, however, all we suffer is hardness, and she suffers from pain all the time,” Zhang said.
“Doctors advised us to give up, but we insisted on taking care of her at home. So long as she’s alive, there is a hope,” Zhang said.
“Before she was ill, Cao treated me as if I were her blood mother. I would take good care of her so that my granddaughter could have a mom when she returns home from the school,” Zhang added.
Zhang’s son and Cao are divorced but he still takes care of her every day, and promises to take care of her even if he has a new family in the future.
