Children in Jiaxin off to a flying start as readers
Children in the Jiaxin community of Jiading are getting an early start to their education. Teachers from a local kindergarten and mothers are getting together regularly to teach them fairy tales and play games.
It’s all in a bid to encourage an interest in books for children 3 years old and under.
Some kindergarten teachers who volunteer for the task say children at level 1 like listening to stories but many are unwilling to read.
“Helping them read and play at an earlier stage is key to their future development. At least they won’t exclude reading after they are enrolled,” said kindergarten head Lu Ye.
Parents combine role-playing games with reading and the children gradually develop a keen interest in reading from such activities.
Cai Ting, 3, had never touched a book before. After a weekend story-telling session at Jiading Library, she now often asks her mother to tell her stories before she goes to sleep.
Tang Yi, whose daughter is attending kindergarten, had been concerned about her child’s development. However, after a yearlong effort, her child is now accustomed to reading.
The experience of Cai, Tang’s child and many other pre-kindergarten children have shown the program to be a success.
