City attractions from the old to the new
WITH a reputation as one of the most famous historical towns in Jiangnan (regions south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River), Jiading is a famous tourist attraction with long history but also full of modern features. Nowadays, Jiading looks like a colorful painting blending various ancient trees, walls, towers and gardens with modern tall buildings, a dynamic motor-racing circuit and the ever-updating Jiading New City.
The most innovative circuit
Anting Town is home to Shanghai International Circuit, the motor-racing track that plays host to the Formula One Chinese Grand Prix each year.
The shape of the track is similar to the Chinese character Shang, and its tight turns make for a challenging high-speed race. It also allows a great view of the racing, and the circuit can hold around 200,000 spectators.
Although the Chinese Grand Prix took place last week, visitors can still enjoy the engines roaring and witness high-speed thrills and spills throughout the year.
From May 18 to 22, the Shanghai International Tournament will launch there, and from July 16 to 24 the Ferrari Festival will take place.
Other events later in the year include the China Touring Car Championship, Honda Energy Saving Race and the C1 Star Race.

The oldest gingko tree
Anting Town in Jiading has the oldest gingko tree in Shanghai, which is believed to be nearly 1,200 years old. The tree's crown is 20 meters in diameter and casts a shade of 300 square meters.
According to a folk tale, soldiers of the Jin Kingdom took a rest under the tree after the death of their garrison commander Lu Deng. The village where the gingko tree is located is known as Guangming (Bright) Village, and most of the village's residents are the later generations of Lu Deng and his soldiers.
A gingko tree theme park occupying 0.7 hectares has been built there and features various types of rockeries, plants, corridors and small bridges.

The most ancient walls
In 1218, when the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) emperor authorized the establishment of Jiading County, Lianqi, downtown Jiading, had a total area of 4 square kilometers, according to historical data.
Jiading was known as the main business center in the area because of its convenient transportation and perfect land condition.
Walls made of soil secured the entire city with main gates on the four directions. There is also a water gate besides each main gate to allow water transportation.
After more than 100 years, bricks were fixed on the surface of the walls and a watch tower was built.
Over time, the defense function of the city wall was reduced, and the ancient Jiading walls have been removed one after another.
Today only two left - the West Water Gate (on the west side of People Street) and Jiading Ancient Wall Park (the southern side of Nandajie Street), with a total length of 240 meters.
Updated Jiading New City
The landscaping around Jiading New City is taking shape with the construction of the city's green belt, Shigang Mentang (a wetland park), Yuanxiang Lake and Ziqi Donglai (a complex of parks), encompassing a total area of nearly 2.1 million square meters.
The construction of major landscaping with an area of 1.7 million square meters is underway, with the greenery, landscaping and river system of about 850,000 square meters already completed.
With a total length of 5.6 kilometers and a green landscape area of 37.2 hectares, the green belt will allow Jiading New City residents to have the perfect place for relaxing in a fresh environment.
Shigangmen Pond is an ecological natural wetland park featuring water courses, walking paths, an X-games area, islands, exercise yard, farmland and bridges.
Yuanxiang Lake is situated at the east end of Jiading New City, opposite the Shanghai International Circuit, and will offer a chance for visitors to stroll around a tranquil aquatic setting.
Ziqi Donglai is Jiading New City's central landscape project, covering a total area of 66.12 hectares. It will include five areas: an ecological forest park, entertainment and leisure park, residential culture Park, commercial park and lakeside culture park.
