Cleanup underway on creeks in Jiading
JIADING is planning to dredge 100 kilometers of waterways this year.
Water in the Zhaqiaojiang section between Qiujiang Creek and Xiaobang Creek was flowing very slowly and garbage floated on the surface.
People living nearby complained about the poor environment. “I can see the floating garbage from my kitchen window,” said Zheng Chenyang, whose apartment is in a riverside apartment.
As the canal is too narrow for heavy equipment, workers are using high-pressure water jets to clear away mud.
More than 3,600 cubic meters has already been removed from the 800-meter waterway, according to an official.
At Huating Town, workers are dredging the Youyi and Changxin creeks. They have built cement slope along the bank, planted trees and removed mud from the water. Cao Kexin, head of Huating’s water management, said the job would be completed next month.
Liu Jianmin, a Malu community resident, said cleaner local rivers would improve the quality of life in the district.
He took a particular interest in the dredging operations at nearby Houshajing Creek and was there almost every day to check on progress.
Jiading is planning to dredge 117 kilometers of the main waterways in its northern section over the next five years. It will also clean up 200 kilometers of small waterways and dredge 450 kilometers.
The district also plans to use pumping stations and water gates to speed up flow in a bid to improve water quality.
