Communities safer places to live

JIADING District has invested 60 million yuan (US$9.23 million) in anti-crime measures with security systems in 417 communities upgraded and 12 residential communities selected for the installation of surveillance cameras and door control systems.
The Jiaxing community invested 1.8 million yuan in a revamp of its security facilities last year. Since that was done, there have been no burglaries and not one car, bike or motorcycle has been stolen. One evening a resident surnamed Zhang forgot to close a window of her car when she parked in the community. A property management employee spotted her mistake via the surveillance system and called her almost immediately.
At the entrance to the community, a new door control is in operation which works in conjunction with a car and resident identification system. Two pedestrian-only entrances have been set up at the east and west sides of the community. Visitors need to register for entrance pass, and security guards can also check with the residents to find out if they are expecting a visit.
There had been several cases of bulgaries in the community before, but since the new system was introduced, police say they have received no reports in the past 12 months. The property management company also installed a 1,300-meter electric fence and 93 high-definition cameras covering the whole community.
Pang Haiyan, who had previously been a burglary victim, recalls that there used to be just 24 surveillance cameras in the community and they had been in service for 10 years. Many were broken and left several blind spots around the community.
Firefighting facilities have also been improved after the main roads in the community were widened.
After the work was carried out, the roads are wide enough for fire engines and there are now more parking spaces provided as well.
