Competition in praise of country cooks
In rural China, it’s a tradition that groups of cooks provide catering services for village events, including weddings and funerals.
In honor of the country cooks’ devotion to their job, Jiading-based condiment company Shanghai Totole Flavoring Food Co Ltd launched a country cook competition earlier this year.
More than 100,000 contestants across the country have signed up, and they will go through nationwide auditions and several other rounds in their counties and provinces, according to the event organizer.
Eventually, 168 of them will get to the final stage of the competition, which will be held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where 10 star country cooks are going to be selected by a panel of professional chefs.
“As a leader in China’s food industry, we want to celebrate Chinese food culture as well as introduce these hard-working country cooks to more people. Many of them have excellent culinary skills and deserve more respect and recognition,” says Rong Yaozhong, general manager of Totole.
So far, the event’s WeChat account has attracted more than 200,000 followers.
