Dead child's father returns Red Cross money

KONG Wei, the father of a child who died from an infection after a successful hematogenic stem cell transplant, is returning a 5,000 yuan (US$731) donation to the Red Cross Society of Jiading.

The Anhui Province native said his son had received a great deal of help and care from the society during his treatment and he wanted to show his gratitude.

In September 2007, Kong's son was suffering from aplastic anemia. His health deteriorated rapidly and the child had to have a hematogenic stem cell transplant.

Luckily Kong's wife's stem cells matched with the boy's. However, even if they used up all their savings, they were still 50,000 yuan short of the medical costs.

Money was raised by the Red Cross and with help from Shanghai TV Station, many kind people donated money.

The hematogenic stem cell transplant was successful but tragically the boy died because of an infection.

Recently, the Kong family has moved to Huacao Town in Minhang District and the husband now faces a debt of almost 200,000 yuan.

"Although currently my family is facing difficulties, I am young and can pay the debt off by working hard," Kong said.

"The 5,000 yuan was donated by kind-hearted people. We should not use it," he said. "We want to give it to those who might be in urgent need of it."
