Ensuring a bumper harvest

JIADING is launching a series of measures to improve the harvest this year, such as increasing the planting area for middle and late maturing rice, promoting the use of planting machinery and solving conflicts between planting and harvesting.

An official with the Jiading Agricultural Committee surnamed Cheng said the district only has about 0.27 hectares of early-maturing rice because it is of poor quality.

Middle-maturing rice has a smaller unit production volume than late-maturing rice, about 375 to 750 kilograms less per hectare. However, middle-maturing rice can be cropped around October 20 every year, which is also the best time to plant wheat.

Last year Jiading planted over 400 hectares of middle-maturing rice and achieved good results.

Planting machinery

Jiading farmers used to plant rice by hand. Since last year, Jiading has expanded the area of machine-planting, making the total area to over 330 hectares. It is convenient for pest and herb control since the rice grows tidily. The machine-planted rice also has deeper roots, which makes it more resistant to bad weather.

This year, Jiading will expand the machine-planting area to 1,333 hectares.

By 2015, it is hoped that 85 percent of Jiading's rice fields will be planted by machine.
