Environmental campaign employing various methods to cut pollution
ENVIRONMENTAL protection authorities in Jiading are launching a campaign to reduce air pollution, especially the pollutants of sulfur dioxide, dust and nitrogen oxide.
The target is that by 2017, the content of PM2.5 particles will decrease by about 20 percent than the number of 2012.
In recent years, Jiading has speeded up the closure or adjustment of enterprises that discharge waste and cause pollution, affecting around 200 enterprises last year.
In Xuhang Town, a paper-making project was closed and annual coal consumption was cut by 5,300 tons. This year, the town plans to shut down four enterprises and reduce annual coal consumption by 3,000 tons, despite two of the companies contributing over 5 million yuan (US$802,000) of taxation to the government every year.
In Jiading there are thousands of construction sites, and the flying dust from these sites is among the major pollution sources.
Green measures
For example, at the exit of the construction site of the Shanghai Xinming Children’s Square in Nanxiang Town, there is a water pool of about 20 square meters. Every truck will run through the pool to wash the tires before leaving the site. Hoses are also used to clean the trucks.
To prevent the dust flying around, the construction waste awaiting disposal is well covered by huge nets on the construction site.
Straw burning is another pollution source, which produces huge quantities of sulfur oxide, dust and nitrogen oxide. Jiading has banned straw burning since 2010. Most of straw is chopped up and buried into the fields while some is used to produce organic fertilizer.
To encourage the farmers make best use of the straw, Jiading District gives subsidies to fertilizer factories and farmers — 200 yuan each ton to the factory, and 90 yuan each mu (667 square meters) of farmland where straw is buried.
In 2013, about 120,000 mu of farmland in Jiading used straw as fertilizer, and about 972 tons of straw was used to produce organic fertilizer.
