E-reading proving popular in Taiping
SINCE the opening of the first public e-reading room at Taiping Village of Jiangqiao Town, more migrant workers in Jiading are taking advantage of the free surfing service.
In addition to government sponsorship, some businesses have backed the scheme, enabling the service to be extended to more communities and companies with large numbers of migrant workers. The model will be further expanded in Jiading in the future.
All the residents in Taiping Village can enjoy the free service with an ID card. "I told my online friends that I can enjoy free access to the Internet and they didn't believe me at all," a migrant worker surnamed Xu from Suzhou of Anhui Province said. More than 400 migrant workers have become registered members of the reading room so far.
Liancheng Group in Jiangqiao with over 1,200 employees decided to set up an e-reading room after the success of the one in Taiping Village. "Around 30 percent of our staff have college degrees and the e-reading room can meet their demand for quick access to information," Party secretary of Liancheng Group Li Longgen said.
The e-reading room can not only provide traditional functions of reading online, but also help members to interact and receive training online, according to Gong Huihui from Jiading District Culture and Radio Bureau.
