Expo tips and summer hints
SPANNING spring and summer, May and June are usually the best time for travel and outings. As World Expo 2010 Shanghai runs with all its pageantry, it would be better for visitors to understand the meaning of each sign at the Expo Park, and take necessary safety measures to prevent possible accidents or injuries during their visits. Please don't forget, meanwhile, to come and see the time-honored Zhouqiao Street in Jiading, a popular tourist resort not far away. Here in a teahouse or a snack bar, you can quickly shake off your fatigue from the Expo tour, and enjoy some moments of particular leisure and pleasure under a warm and brilliant sun.
Signs - The Best Guideat Your Service
The World Expo is a pageant that you may not want to miss. Omnipresent at the Expo Park are well-designed signs, thoughtful services, attentive volunteers as well as Expo taxis that can take you to any destination across the city. Even foreign visitors may easily find their way to any of the venues or pavilions they look forward to visiting.
Signs are the best guide in the Expo Park. From any direction, you will surely see a sign within 100 meters that indicates (in four languages, including Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean) your current location as well as nearby pavilions, restaurants, souvenir shops and even automatic teller machines. The sign-guiding system at the Expo Park consists of nearly 600 fixed and mobile signs with either maps or text information. Each sign shows Chinese and English texts as well as an intuitive icon that may help you easily understand its meaning. For example, the icon for a baby care room depicts an adult carrying a child, and that for an information desk is a huge question mark.
If you take your kids to the Expo Park, you can let them communicate with Haibao robots that speak six languages, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, English, French and German. They have touch screens on their chests to answer inquiries on Expo information, tour directions, and other public services. They can introduce themselves and reach out for handshakes with visitors. Moreover, these Haibao robots can perform various dances and sing different songs in several languages.
Tips for Preventing Allergies and Injuries
In late spring and early summer, the air is usually filled with a massive amount of allergens such as bacteria, spores and pollens, which may make some people suffer from allergies, including sneezing, stuffy or running nose, itchy throat and rashes. People who are allergic to pollens should reduce their outdoor activities. When they go outdoors, it is better for them to wear medical masks and try to avoid contact with pollens that may cause allergic reactions. Regular intake of honey is also a good way to prevent allergy from pollens.
Hiking is a good activity, but it may make you prone to injuries. Without necessary first-aid skills, any improper treatment may aggravate injuries. One important thing is to avoid massage before an injury is diagnosed. Take a bone fracture as an example: the jagged edge of the fractured bone may be as sharp as a knife, so even a few massages may hurt the muscle tissues and, in the worse case, damage nervous tissues or blood vessels. Before seeing a surgeon, you can apply a cold pack to the injured spot and try to maintain its temperature at around 5 degrees Celsius, which may ease the pain and cause vasoconstriction to reduce or stop bleeding. It is only 48 hours after the injury that hot compresses can be applied to stimulate blood circulation and help reduce swelling.
Old Street - An Ideal Recreational Resort
As the weather gets hotter, quite a few milk-tea houses and dessert shops have opened along the famous Zhouqiao Street in Jiading.
Milk Shop is a very popular milk-tea house here. One of its specialties is the salty, delicious pudding milk. Another signature drink has a weird name - "hundan milk tea" - which turns out to be a mixture of tapioca and coconut syrup and tastes quite refreshing. The shop also serves simple meals as well as hot-pot dishes. On a bright afternoon, sit next to the window on the second floor and watch the bustling street below.
85 Cafe is a popular bakery in Jiading. To many patrons, the biggest impression here is probably the long waiting line. Another choice is the "bread with spicy minced pork," a golden bread roll with a heavy layer of meat. Looking simple, it tastes really great. A couple of rolls and a cup of milk tea will make a perfect lunch.
Another new restaurant is the Boiled Tea House, founded by a man from Taiwan. It serves nearly 100 types of milk tea and desserts, and its premium drinks are all made from tea produced in Taiwan. The soymilk made from black soybeans and corn, in particular, is most recommendable for its sweetness and fragrance.
