Expo tourists enjoy district flavor
MORE than 150 tourists from South Korea, the first foreign group taking a charter flight to visit World Expo 2010 Shanghai, stayed at Great Tang Hotel in Jiading Disrict.
The Expo has driven the development of the district's tourism.
Places of interests in Jiading have received 49,000 tourists since April 30, up 29 percent on the previous year. Ticket revenues have reached 428,000 yuan (US$62,679). A survey of five hotels showed 2,878 tourists staying during the May Day holiday.
Tian Hu, manager of Great Tang Hotel, said the hotel has accommodated Expo tourist groups every day during the event. The room occupancy rate of the hotel hit 60 percent in May, an increase of over 30 percent on the previous year.
Also, a few hotels are developing value-added services. Blue Palace Hotel provides customized Expo tour services. So far, almost 800 people from three companies have booked the service. Moreover, a special kitchen has opened for Muslim tourists in the hotel.
To attract more visitors, scenic spots in Jiading are taking on new looks.
At Huilongtan Park, flowers are planted around the statue of Haibao, mascot of the Expo.
At Guyi Garden, Haibao, together with mascots of the past Expos, have been made on flower terraces. The venue has received 1,700 tourists since May 1, up 20 percent on periods prior to the Expo.
On May 10, a delegation of 10 officials from P??cs, a Hungarian city, visited China Imperial Examination Museum, Lu Yanshao Art Gallery and Jiading New City Planning Hall.
"When walking on the Zhuangyuan Bridge, I feel as if I'm touching history," said Szolt Pava, mayor of Pcs. He also hoped to conduct more exchanges with the local government in terms of culture and education.
The mayor also visited local elementary schools, where he played table tennis with students.
In the next two months, delegations from Wolfsburg, Germany and Yao, Japan will also visit Jiading.
