Farmers introduce new varieties

RESIDENTS in Jiading will have more options when choosing vegetables and fruits as local farmers introduce dozens of new products and breeds this spring.
Jiading Aquatic Products Base has welcomed the arrival of 100 Cuora flavomarginata, a kind of turtle from Dabieshan Mountain in Anhui Province. The aquarium turtles have bright yellow stripes along the length of their keels, with a pattern similar to sandalwood. The retail price of each adult turtle reaches more than 5,000 yuan (US$760).
After exploring the habits of the turtles, the researchers at the base plan to promote the pet turtle among local farmers. It is estimated that the investment for raising the turtles will cost about 15,000 yuan and it will only take around three years to recover the cost, which is relatively profitable.
Jiading "native" Hami 0526 melons will be on sale in early June, Jiading Hami Melon Institute announced.
Huami 0526 has moderate sugar, is more disease-resistant and can be stored for a longer period. Its ouput is 10 percent higher than the traditional species and expected to reach about 30,000 kilograms per hectare.
Shanghai Hongtai Fruits and Vegetables Cooperative in Malu Town will plant 0.57 hectare of blueberries in early April.
