Fortune helps industrial upgrading
ALMOST 50 Fortune 500 companies have located their headquarters, research and development centers or manufacturing bases in Jiading District.
Most of companies are related to autos and car parts, electronics, food and coating materials.
These are considered "star companies" by district economic managers. They form the backbone of district plans related to industrial restructuring, technological advancement, production increase and energy savings.
Flextronics Technology (Shanghai) Co Ltd established its first product line in Malu Town in 2004. It mainly produces printers and cell phones.
Founded in 1969 in the Silicon Valley, Flextronics International Ltd operates in the sectors of automotive, computing, consumer goods, infrastructure, medical equipment and mobile phones.
The company's Shanghai arm, since 2006, has moved its research and development, design and test centers to Jiading. The company has also moved its products up the value chain into such areas as 3G wireless base stations and photoelectric transducers. It annual sales are about US$700 million.
"The output value of a 3G wireless base stations equals that of 200 cell phones. However, production uses much less energy,'' said Huang Rongguang, from Flextronics. "Being high-tech, high value-added and high growth is what we'd like to achieve."
Continental Automotive Systems (Shanghai) Co Ltd, an arm of Germany's Continental AG, is another high-profile company in the Jiading stable of cornerstone companies.
