From Red Flag limousines for leaders to cars for everyone

THE automobile, symbol of modern civilization, is transforming daily life in China, fouling the air and fueling its own car culture.

China has changed from a nation of bicycles where only leaders rode in Red Flag limousines to a country where everyone wants a car. And many drive them.

Cars are no longer a luxury but a necessity in many people's lives, a consumer product as well as a status symbol.

And when a vast number of consumer products are produced, they create a value beyond their practical value, they create a culture.

Car culture is sweeping China, and people come together not just for talking on engine capacity, but also for making friends and going on group outings.

The growing number of vehicles not only worsens the air pollution, but also means there is more traffic congestion and more road accidents.

Cars have improved life quality to some extent, but we have to mind our manners on the road and make sure that car culture is a civilized culture.
