Good news for commuters heading downtown
THE second phase of work on the Jiading-Minhang Elevated Road’s north section has finished and it opened to traffic on the night of September 28, marking the full opening of the elevated road’s north section.
Motorists will find their travel time between Jiading and the Hongqiao Transportation Hub in Minhang District reduced by 15 minutes and vehicles with plates starting with “沪C” will be able to reach Hongqiao Airport Terminal directly.
A Jiading News reporter took the on-ramp at the north of Yunzaobang River to get on to the elevated road and the journey to Hongqiao Airport’s terminal buildings took just 15 minutes.
Jiading residents can reach the Hongqiao Transportation Hub through Beidi Elevated Road to reach the north entrance of the hub or take the main artery of Songze Elevated Road on the west side of the hub.
Previously, they had to travel from the G15 to Songze Elevated Road to Hongqiao Transportation Hub. The whole 37-kilometer route took about 40 minutes, with relatively more big trucks on the G15.
And Jiading commuters, who work at offices in downtown Shanghai, had to take the S5, transiting at Middle Ring Road to Putuo District before reaching downtown Shanghai. The opening of the new elevated road will offer a faster alternative to downtown Shanghai.
“When it rained, I had to spend at least two hours on the way to work,” said Wu Zhiming, a commuter who works at Agricultural Bank of China’s Jiading Branch. “Now, I have an alternative when it rains after the second phase of the north part of Jiading-Minhang Elevated Road opened.”
Now commuters can take Beidi Elevated Road to reach Jiading-Minhang Elevated Road to travel to downtown Shanghai.
Before, Nanxiang Town and Fengbang Town were separated by railway lines and traveling between the two towns had been very inconvenient. After the opening of the new elevated road, another commuter said, “I will not have to take devious routes or take tunnels to travel from Nanxiang to Fengbang.”
However, surface road systems still need to be improved to better connect with the new elevated road. Jiading resident Wang Yue drove his vehicle from Fengbang to Jiading Town during morning rush hour on September 29, the first morning after the new elevated road’s opening and the trip cost him about 30 minutes. Wang said the traffic between Cao’an Highway and Jiading-Minhang Highway is quite smooth but he suffered heavy congestion after he left the elevated road from the Yunzaobang Bridge ramp. The route from Huyi Highway to Bao’an Road took him 20 minutes. Wang said he thought the situation would improve after the Huyi Highway improvement project is completed.
The notice on the latest restricted zone for vehicles with plates starting “沪C,” published on April 15, states that the Jiading-Minhang Elevated Road and Beidi Elevated Road are not included in the restricted zone during rush hours. Owners of vehicles with plates starting with “沪C” can travel directly on the Jiading-Minhang Elevated Road and Beidi Elevated Road from Jiading District to terminal buildings of Hongqiao International Airport.
The Jiading-Minhang Elevated Road is one of the four major arteries connecting to the Hongqiao Transportation Hub and its total length is about 36 kilometers from S32 to S6 bypassing Jiading, Qingpu, Songjiang and Minhang districts.
The first phase of the north section of Jiading-Minhang Elevated Road opened at the end of 2014 and it connects Beidi Elevated Road in the south and G2 in the north. It is 4.67 kilometers long, has eight lanes and a speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour.
The second phase of the elevated road connects G2 in the south and S6 in the north. It is 6.76 kilometers long, with six lanes and a speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour.
