Health and development go hand-in-hand
JIADING was ranked first among all the districts and county in Shanghai in terms of physique condition, according to the 2010 Shanghai Residents' Physique Monitoring Report.
Currently Jiading is actively building up a national model district of preventing chronic non-communicable diseases, calling residents to adjust food structure, do more exercise and promote health self-management.
Since 2007, Jiading startedsetting up "health care self-management teams" at towns, subdistricts and villages. The team members learn how to prevent chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, health self-management methods, blood pressure measuring skills and doing balance exercises. In addition, team members receive health care guidance from community doctors. Jiading has set up altogether 565 self-management teams with 9,266 members in the past four years.
Daily exercise
Four years ago, Gu Xiangsheng joined the health care self-management team at Baihe Community of Nanxiang Town. She accompanied other members to health care lectures and daily exercises. One day at the end of 2007, when Gu was watching TV she found that half of her normal sight was gone. Immediately Gu realized she might be suffering from cerebral hemorrhaging as she had learnt about its symptoms from the health care self-management team. Gu took a taxi to the local hospital, where she received timely treatment, and luckily enough that she suffered no serious after-effects at all.
"Now I believe that I am my own best doctor," Gu said.
Doing regular exercise is one of the basic treatments of diabetes. Since 2009, Jiading has conducted exercise intervention testing on patients with Type 2 diabetes in Malu Town and last year expanded it to the whole district.
Patients with diabetes will do exercise at a set time at a designated place. "Doing the exercise relaxes all the bones and muscles, I feel especially comfortable and good, and it is easier to keep on doing it as a lot of people do it together," a patient Zhang Rongxing said.
Jiading District authorities also help residents treat chronic diseases by providing free medicine and setting up a health care science park.
In 1996, Waigang Town provided free high blood pressure medicine on a test basis. From 2007 Jiading expanded the policy to patients through the countryside cooperative health care program in the district. More than 9,000 farmers had benefited from the program by the end of 2010.
The health care science park at Juyuan New Area opened to residents for free in 2009. The park has six areas, covering disease prevention and physical testing, with advanced equipment to test the physical conditions of residents.
