History preserved as workers give ancient structures a new lease of life

Repairs have been completed to Lu’s Residence and Shen’s Ancestral Hall, two of Jiading’s immovable cultural relics.
Work started on Lu’s Residence at Loutang area of Jiading Industrial Zone at the end of last year.
It was on the verge of collapse after years of poor maintenance. A horizontal inscribed board was found in the residence with calligraphy by Shi Xiwei, a successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations in Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
As a magistrate of Hsinchu in Taiwan, Shi was described as someone who “can promote the beneficial and abolish the harmful wherever he worked.”
Shen’s Ancestral Hall was built in 1916 at Jiangqiao Town and is the only brick-concrete structure with a combination of Chinese and Western elements in Jiading District.
The building has been used as a school and a factory workshop. During repairs, workers completely renovated the floors, walls, windows and roof with traditional materials.
Slogans marked on the wall after liberation have been kept in order to keep its history. In the future the hall will serve as an exhibition hall for furniture made during Qing and Ming (1368-1644) dynasties.
Meanwhile, Nanxiang Town added another scenic spot after the Hechashan area protection project was completed at the end of last year. The Jiading-Minhang Elevated Highway was rerouted as a result.
In recent years, the relic protection of constructors in Jiading has been improved greatly when construction projects conflicted with cultural relic protection.
Since last year, Jiading has completed repairs of six immovable cultural relics, and the maintenance of Wangxian Bridge in Waigang Town and Gaoyi Bridge in Juyuan New Area are underway.
