United Imaging Healthcare, an advanced medical imaging company that settled in Jiading in 2011, is taking off on the road of independent research and development.
Over the past eight years it has grown to over 3,000 employees with branches and research and development centers around the world.
Its research teams are behind the success. More than 130 scientists as well as 200 staff members with doctorate degrees contributed to the process.
Dr Chu Xu and his team are among them. They began from scratch in the company and their latest project is now producing the best technologies for core imaging parts in the world in terms of capacity and stability.
Back in the 1990s the general environment for core technology research and development was rather down, Chu said, and the market on the other hand was not confident in domestic products.
鈥淢any of the graduates from Tsinghua University opted to work at R&D centers in foreign-invested companies where two or three persons can share an advanced device, when there could be only one such machine for the entire department in Tsinghua,鈥 Chu said.
鈥淏ut these people were rarely involved with R&D in a bigger picture,鈥 he added.
Yet Chu was encouraged when he learned that United Imaging Healthcare decided to develop domestic products on its own.
Chu and his team are strict with every detail of the work. Once they came to the last session before production for a device, while it turned out that a part on the base could malfunction in use. They immediately decided to start over, even though they had worked on it for two years.
It is also a rule for the team to spend 10 percent of its time on research and development and the rest on knowing their own boundaries, so as to make breakthroughs.
