Initial plan for Jiading tramway is mapped out

An initial tramway plan for Jiading has been mapped out, according to district government officials.

A tramway line is going to start at the Jiading New City Station of Shanghai Metro Line 11, and go past Huyi Highway, Huancheng Road, Chengbei Road, and cover Jiading New Town and Old Town, Juyuan New Area as well as other areas, and will connect with Metro Line 1 in Taicang, Jiangsu.

The total length of the tramway line will be about 24 kilometers and it will alleviate the pressure of public transport in Jiading’s east urban area.

The district government is going to submit the plan for feasibility study and further examination, and begin early-stage preparations for the project.

Compared to subway and light rail, the tramway has the advantages of lower energy consumption and lower emission, and it is quicker and cheaper to build.

The cost of building just one subway line would be enough to finance the construction of at least four tramway lines of the same length, and the construction process is said to only take one third of the time compared to the subway.
