Jade carving culture the focus of group's pavilion

CHINESE jade culture is a highlight of the Jiading-based Aurora Group's World Expo pavilion located on the Puxi side of the world fair.

Shanghai Aurora Furniture Co Ltd is the local affiliate of the Aurora Group which is host to the only Taiwan-based corporate Expo pavilion.

With a total investment of 100 million yuan (US$14.65 million), the pavilion features six exhibition areas on an area of 3,000 square meters reaching to a height of 14 meters.

The two-story building is decorated purely and simply in ivory white.

Along the wude changlang, ("five merits corridor"), hang large lamps and hand paintings.

"We've experienced the most painful period to design the pavilion, yet also the proudest," said Tan Baijuan, vice director of Aurora Pavilion.

Designers drew hundreds of drafts for the corridor and got vetoed again and again. Finally a decision was made to do hand paintings, which include five representative city scenes as themes. They included Lujiazui, the Bund, the City God Temple, Century Park and the China Pavilion at Expo.

On the second floor, visitors will feel calmed by a "digital bamboo forest" on the walls accompanied by the sounds of running water and birdcalls.

Also on this level is a 40-seat 3-D theater. From April 20, it will play the 3-D film "Nuwa Mending the Sky" all day long.

The "city wisdom" exhibition area presents ancient and modern jade works. This features eight kinds of jade and 13 award-winning jade carvings.

Visitors can also watch demonstrations of jade carving.

At the "city style" exhibition area, more than 40 precious jadeware items collected by Aurora Group are displayed with 20 small holographic imaging machines.

Aesthetic applications and theory on jade are introduced in the "city aesthetics" exhibition area.

At the "city dream" exhibition area, a piece of 2.5-ton jade and Beijing Olympics medals made of fine jade are exhibited.

The short jade journey takes visitors about 20 minutes.

"Jade's history in China spans 8,000 years," Tan said. "We hope every visitor can know about jade and enjoy the revelations after leaving the pavilion."
