Jiading people's modern approach to ancient craft

PASSING through one bustling street after another, I searched for the site of ancient history. No sooner had I come into the stone-paved street in this ancient town south of the Yangtze River, than my eyes were attracted by cloth printed in indigo and white.

With a history dating back to ancient times, these handmade prints have embodied a unique oriental culture and the charm of nature.

No matter as clothes, curtains, handkerchiefs or sheets, all these fabrics shone with the beauty of indigo and white, telling of a great craftsmanship that has been passed down from generation to generation.

A look into the history of indigo prints reveals that the creation started in the Qin (221 BC-206 BC) and the Han (206 BC-AD 220) dynasties more than 2,000 years ago.

Unearthed prints prove that wax printing in indigo was well developed as early as the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220).

By the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties when commerce boomed, the talented women in Jiading implemented a technique which instilled new vitality, coming up with herb-spotting of the fabric. This special report looks at the development of this great skill.
