Jiading starts new chapter to encourage reading

JIADING District is exploring a series of outreach programs to ensure residents have access to reading materials.

The "Household Library" program is mostly in villages far from public libraries and makes books, magazines and newspapers available to local people. The household library is usually managed by reading enthusiasts who are willing to make their home a library.

Lu Yaochuan, the household library curator in Xuhang Town, not only offers books to the readers nearby, but also volunteers to deliver books and newspapers to elderly neighbors. With the praise around him for his kind service, Lu said with a smile, "I am happy in running this library, and will go on this work."

Jiading has established 35 household libraries since 2006. The next two years will see a rapid increase to 100. The Jiading District Library has equipped every household library with bookshelves, tables and chairs, 500 books and over 10 kinds of newspapers and magazines. As for what kind of books and newspapers will be served to these household libraries, it will be decided by the villagers.

Electronic reading room for the migrant workers in Taiping Village of Jiangqiao Town opened on November 23. It was so busy the following week that many people couldn't find an empty table. The reading room covers 100 square meters with a capacity of over 50 readers.

Currently there are thousands of migrant workers living around Taiping. Xu Jie, who has worked in Shanghai for more than three years, would often play poker or have a dinner party with friends on the weekends. But now he prefers to spend time surfing the Internet or brushing up on his knowledge in the electronic reading room, which greatly enriches his life.

Two library instructors are responsible for managing the reading room. "We are working out a regulation to make more migrant workers get Internet access," said Wan Xingyue, one of the instructors.

Zhenxin Community Library sent books to 3131 Creative Park recently during noontime of workdays, attracting more than 300 office workers.

3131 Creative Park is home to many high-tech companies. A lot of office workers at these companies like reading, but lack the time to visit the library. To meet their requirements, Zhenxin Community Library prepared and lent about 1,000 books popular among the young readers. The service will be expanded to communities and schools for more readers.
