Leading with cultural campaign

JIADING District astounded in a citywide campaign to give local residents easier access to public cultural facilities, and will join hands with Xuhui District to bid to become the National Demonstration Zone of the Public Cultural Service.
Jiading beat Changning, Minhang and Songjiang districts in the review on March 1, and became one of the only two candidates in Shanghai to join in the nationwide competition. The review is based on marks from superior departments and the result of a public survey. A panel of 39 experts also gave on-site scores.
The list of the first round of national demonstration zones will be announced next year.
Jiading District leads in the construction of public cultural and sports facilities. Each of the 13 towns or sub-districts in Jiading has at least one 3,500-square-meter public cultural center for residents' relaxation and recreation. All the 13 centers offer book-lending service and spaces for dancing, performance and exhibitions.
The Cultural and Sports Center of Anting Town was open to the public last December. With a total investment of 100 million yuan (US$15 million), the center has a heated swimming pool, 3D cinema, gym and billiard room. The center is among the top-level entertainment facilities in the city. Sportswear giant Nike also chose the center to hold its China sports carnival on March 2.
The district features the renowned China Imperial Examination Museum, Bamboo Carving Museum and Lu Yanshao Art Gallery. The new Jiading Library and Cultural Center, Jiading Museum and Han Tianheng Art Gallery are under construction. Another four or five public memorial halls and museums will begin construction in the next five years.
There are 421 cultural activity rooms in 260 villages in Jiading. Local residents can use one library card to borrow books from all the district and community libraries.
By the end of 2010, the total area of Jiading's public cultural facilities reached 354,000 square meters. The average per capita cultural facilities area is 0.25 square meters, 0.07 square meters higher than the city average.
Meanwhile, Jiading District stages more than 2,000 performances, 600 folk operas and 8,000 digital movies to the villages every year. A group of more than 500 grass-roots cultural instructors also play an active role in the promotion of traditional culture.
The Shanghai Automotive Cultural Festival, the Confucius Cultural Festival, Nanxiang Xiaolong Culture Exhibition and Malu Grape Festival, all hosted by Jiading, have drawn visitors from home and abroad.
Every year an average of 850,000 people join in more than 2,000 activities in Jiading.
