Leaving my mark at Automobile City

ONE day in July a colleague of mine, Xiao Gao, approached me and said: "It will be the 10th anniversary of the Automobile City. Will you write something for it?"

I've already worked in the Automobile City for eight years, and felt inspired to write something after my conversation with Gao. Since I'm reading the book "The Innovation Secrets of Steve Jobs," I'd like to say something about the revelations the Apple co-founder brought me.

Jobs used to say: "Follow your heart and instinct with courage. Sometimes they know better where you should go." It's just like my life.

Eight years ago, I hesitated whether I should work in the Automobile City or not. My biggest concern was that the job was far from my home and the salary was not good. However, it was a job that I really liked from my heart. Eventually, I settled down here with my dream career.

Eight years fly by just like a moment, despite the long and hard road we took through the establishment of Shanghai Automobile and Key Parts Industrial Base, the approval of China (Shanghai) Automobile Part Export Base, Shanghai International Automobile City New Industrialization Demonstration Base and China (Shanghai) Electric Automobile Demonstration City. But their eventual success taught me that as long as I liked what I was doing, then success would not be far off.

Since work occupies more than one-third of a person's entire life, a job you like will turn the daily grind into a joy and enrich your existence.

"Leaving marks in the world" is one of the seven principles of success of Jobs. In fact, in Automobile City, a place full of dreams, it's probably hard not to leave marks.

I remember that during the drafting of an implementation plan for the Electric Automobile Demonstration City, we had discussed and revised the plan at least five times. Eventually, we formed the final plan of "One Base, Two Clubs, Three Platforms and Four Centers" on a flight to Beijing, which is also the initial appearance of today's Electric Automobile Demonstration City.

But how is "leaving marks in the world" possible? For Jeffery Young, the author of "iCon Steve Jobs," the key is "to be confident about your own products like a salesman, to be passionate like a preacher, to be persistent like a zealot, and to be determined like a poor guy who swears to succeed."

In fact, each of us has a dream, but few people take it seriously or work hard to realize it.

In closing I would like to leave a quote by Jobs that summarizes my time at the Automobile City: "Only when you believe you are doing a great job will you be really satisfied; only when you love your job will you succeed."
