Life is sweet in the ‘leisure city’

YouhuoCheng, literally “leisure city” in Chinese, is really worthy of its name. Residents are enjoying happy life here and more than 90 percent of them say they are satisfied with their new homes.

The residents couldn’t help praising the security guards, because they have not only done a good job in ensuring the neighborhood’s safety but also helping the residents in many other ways as well.

Xu Rongfang lives alone in Building No. 8 and her apartment is filled with all kinds of plants.

When the season changes, a lot of them need to be moved, but it’s too heavy a task for her.

“I hesitated to talk to the security guards but unexpectedly they agreed immediately,” Xu said.

Youhuocheng is a new community near the Jiading West Station of Metro Line 11.

More than 70 percent of the residents are from other parts of China and didn’t understand Shanghai dialect, making it difficult to make friends.

So the neighborhood committee held a Shanghai dialect class, teaching them the everyday life dialogues in shopping, taking buses and dining out in restaurants.

“The class proved popular and the residents attending the class are eager to talk in Shanghai dialect to each other after class,” the neighborhood committee director Zhou Yiwei said.

The neighborhood committee also holds symposiums and cooking classes.

Some volunteers in the community are always ready to offer service to the residents. For instance, Li Quan and five other residents formed a group to give health lectures while Su Fenghua gathered a group practicing shadow boxing every morning.

There are more than 40 volunteers in the community, covering healthcare, sports and education.
