Marriage is not always a bed of roses ...
Zhu Jianmin has been a marriage registration officer for nearly 20 years and the real-life experiences he has had are often more dramatic than anything in the movies.
Zhu has witnessed many couples getting married one day only to return to get divorced the next.
One apparently happy couple came to the office one Friday to get their marriage certificate and it was obvious to everyone that they were in love.
However, they returned the very next day to get divorced.
The woman was in tears, saying she was being cheated. It turned out that before the marriage the couple had planned to emigrate. However, the man told her after receiving the marriage certificate that he couldn’t take her with him.
Despite some unhappy endings, Zhu is always touched by love stories.
Zhu recalled that one couple in their 30s had tears streaming down their faces and they were too emotional to speak.
They had been recruited by a scientific research institute in Jiading some eight years ago and during that time had endured many hardships including the death of relatives.
They remembered all the hard times and the achievements: buying a car and buying a house. Their story moved everyone in the office.
Apart from marriage certificates and divorce certificates, many people came to get a copy of their marriage certificate.
“The marriage certificates are very useful, especially when someone needs to go abroad, buy or sell houses and cancel permanent residency registrations,” Zhu said.
One old couple came to get another copy of their marriage certificate as they were seeking to emigrate to the US.
However, their marriage certificate was declined by US consulate as there were problems with the date of their marriage.
It turned out that the couple had mistaken the date of the new certificate as their marriage date.
Happily for all concerned, everything was sorted out in the end.
