Measures to cool down the locals

Governments, companies and neighborhood committees were acting to help local residents go through the record high heat, ensuring electricity safety, helping defray household costs and providing a cool environment for factory workers.
The power supplier has renovated the wiring and electricity meters in old residential buildings to ensure stable electricity so that home appliances such as air conditioners can work normally.
At some communities, coupons were issued to the needy households to help offset the hovering power and water bills. In Jiading Industrial Zone, for example, coupons valued at 43,000 yuan (US$6,992) were given out to 361 households.
Local companies are also improving cooling measures at workshops.
At the Shanghai Johnson Controls Automotive Components Co Ltd, a restroom has been set up inside the workshop that can cater for 120 workers at one time. Inside, the workers can take a break four times a day, enjoying cool water, air conditioning and a refrigerator.
