New focus on Internet advances
THE Shanghai "Internet of Things" Center, co-developed by Jiading District government and the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Shanghai Institute of Microsystems and Information Technology, opened on March 2.
The partners will collaborate over three years to promote research and development of core technology for the Internet of Things, and build Jiading into the most competitive Internet technology research base, project and application center and core technology industrial cluster in China.
The Internet of Things refers to all items connected to the Internet through radio frequency identification devices to achieve intelligent identification and management.
It can be applied to intelligent buildings, mobile units, environment surveillance, and vehicle scheduling. Its application will exert an influence on the economy, society and individual living.
It is recognized as the third wave in information development since the introduction of computers and the Internet, and is regarded as the next trillion-dollar information industry following the Internet.
Taking full advantage of being a "wireless city," Jiading also relies on its international automobile city's industry platform to promote application of the Internet of Things.
An area of 18.67 hectares at the southwest of Metro Line 11's Jiading North Station has been set aside to establish the Shanghai Internet of Things Center.
With a total investment of 920 million yuan (US$134.75 million), the construction project will be divided into two phases. The area will feature a technology research center, a demonstration center and a training center. The first phase of construction will be kicked off in June.
Jiading government has formulated a three-year action plan to develop the Internet of Things with technology applied at Malu Grape Park, Jiading New City and community medical services.
A special fund will be set up to support transport, urban construction and environment projects as main sectors to apply the technology of the Internet of Things.
