New pipes among measures to improve water quality

WATER quality in Jiading is set to improve after new pipes are installed between the Chenhang Reservoir in Baoshan District and four water plants of Jiading District to bring water directly from the Yangtze River.

The project started on March 28.

Jiading’s water at present mainly comes from the Huating Water Factory which takes water from the Shugou River.

Quality can be variable and supplies often inadequate to meet the demand.

In 2010, the Shanghai city government and Jiading district government formulated a plan for water supplies and sewage treatment in the district which would make it possible for residents to have access to water from the Yangtze.

Pipes of two meters in diameter are being laid, connecting the Chenhang Reservoir to the Yongsheng, Jiading, Anting and Jiabei water factories.

The total length of the pipes will be 17.8 kilometers, with 6.5 kilometers of them in Baoshan.

Water quality will be greatly improved thanks to the stable water quality in the Yangtze River and the low risk of pollution, according to government officials.

Meanwhile, Jiading is to further improve water quality with the introduction of a new water treatment system and renovation of the existing pipe network.

According to the plan, when the first phase of the project is completed in September next year, the daily capacity in the district will be 400,000 tons.

This will be increased to 770,000 tons after the entire project is finally completed in 2020.
