New residents quickly feel at home in Jiading
MIGRANT workers, relocated residents from downtown Shanghai and expatriates are all called "new residents" in Jiading District. To offer better service for them and help them get integrated into the local society as soon as possible, Jiading has done a lot.
In Juyuan New Area of Jiading, Jiabao is a special community, where the newcomers account for 60 percent of the total residents. Wang Shen, a native from Shanxi Province, who is now living in Jiabao community, went to the community medical service center with many other elders for a free health check on June 7. Though he has no hukou, or permanent residence permit, in Jiabao community, he doesn't worry about being rejected, as Juyuan New Area has taken the lead in Jiading to expand this free health checks to all the residents regardless of their hukou problem.
Like health, education is another key issue for many new residents, as public schooling resources are limited in the neighborhood. To help relieve the complaints, Jiayou community organized volunteers to tutor for the kids of new residents to ease their concerns about their kids' education. Jiayou community also organized new moms to tour Juyuan New Area to help them get familiar with the nearby public services. Their stops included Chenjiashan Park and other public activity venues.
Wet market is another concern for some residents. Wang Miaozhen, a new resident in Yongxiang community, Nanxiang Town, complained there was no wet market in the neighborhood. In response, the community set up a small market of about 50 square meters to make their life more convenient.
Yongxiang community has also set up Voicing Day, Charity Day and Show Day to make the life of the newcomers more colorful, and invite them to be involved in the management of the community. On Voicing Day, which is held once in a month, new residents can join locals to make suggestions regarding community management, and on Charity Day, they are invited to join volunteer teams to offer services such as haircut for seniors and appliance repair. On Show Day all residents can stage a performance in front of the audience.
