Nothing fishy about making lanterns
THE Lantern Festival has made lanterns popular again. Although many like to buy their lanterns from shops, we prefer to make a unique fish-shaped lantern myself, not only for fun but also to bring good luck for the year.
It is not complicated making your own lantern.
First sketch a fish - draw it to the size you want your lantern to be. Then take some wire, make them two triangular frames shaped like the fish and tie the heads together with string. The two wire frames should be identical. Then take two pieces of wire about 6 centimeters long and fix them in place as the dorsal fins. Take another two pieces of wire of about 8 centimeters and make these into the tail fins. Now the heads of the two frames are tied while the tails are loose.
Next it's time for the covering. I suggest using white silk or cellophane paper, wrapping securely over the frame but don't forget to leave room for the light bulb at the back of the lantern.
After covering the lantern, glue a strip of gold paper along the seams. Cut some red paper for the gills, gold for the eyes and various colors to make a pattern on the body and tail.
Finally, insert cotton cords through the both sides of the dorsal fins and one through the tail fins, bind the three ends together and fasten them to a rod.
Now your brightly colored fish lantern is finished - don't forget to put a light bulb inside the lantern before you take it out at night.
