Old houses open

NINE old houses built during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties (1644-1911) will be open to tourists around May 1. The renovated houses scattered in the north and west side of Bole Square in central Jiading, include five Anhui-style constructions, three Jiading residential buildings and one Jiangxi-style house.

Student festival

The 2011 Jiading District Middle School Student Associations Cultural Festival has kicked off at Dazhong Industrial School. The festival features a selection of star student clubs, a singing contest, a dynamic web page design competition and a show of student clubs.

Hearing aid help

Jiading District Disabled Persons' Federation has paid a large part of the bill for hearing aids for 44 people suffering from hearing loss and financial hardship. With the subsidies, each person paid only 1,000 yuan (US$153) for a hearing aid worth up to 5,000 yuan.

Donors register

Jiading District Body (Cornea) Donation Registrants Association said that 562 people have signed up to donate their bodies and corneas when they die since the association was set up in 2009. Jiading Red Cross also set up a fund for the donors and their families.

Trees bear fruit

Fruits shaped like mini mangoes can be found hanging on the branches of several osmanthus trees in the Nanchen Neighborhood of Xincheng Road Community, which is rare for the sweet-scented trees.

Wushu victory

Wang Hongyun, a fourth-grade pupil at Fengbang Elementary School, won the third place in the 9th Hong Kong International Wushu Routine Championship on March 12. Wang had undertaken three months of rigorous training which contributed towards his success in the competition.

Bird protection

A total of 14 illegal bird nets were confiscated and 13 wild migratory birds were freed during Jiading's special campaign to protect migratory birds. The two-month campaign began in mid-February.



Basketball champs

The 2011 CBA National Youth Basketball League (Jiading Division) came to a close on March 28 with Shanghai winning a 78-68 victory over Hong Kong in the final. The nine-day event attracted more than 1,000 basketball lovers to Jiading Stadium.
