Old town, bucolic life tours popular
JIADING District's three travel sectors - highlighted by auto, ancient towns and rural life - have generated nearly 2.18 million visits this year, an increase of 11.4 percent compared to last year.
Tourism revenue has reached 580 million yuan (US$84.91 million), increasing by 12.1 percent compared with last year.
The district was recently approved to be a demonstration area where people can experience an interaction of urban and rural experiences during World Expo Shanghai 2010.
Each of the three travel routes has its own strong point.
Malu Grape Park is a main scenic spot on the rural route. It mainly attracts young office workers from Shanghai's downtown area. For families and students, spots such as Huating Family in Maojiao Village are popular for spring and autumn outings. A yearly visitor flow of 100,000 can be guaranteed.
The tours themed "ancient towns" and "autos" target visitors from the city's urban areas and the Yangtze River Delta region.
Putuo District resident Wang Qinhui took her daughter last month to Jiading to visit Guyi Garden and sample local cuisine such as xiaolongbao (small steamed bun).
"Nanxiang Town is close to the city's downtown area and it's convenient to take the kid there," Wang said. "Walking over a stone-paved Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) road, we feel very good here."
By improving facilities such as roads, security systems, telephone booths and traffic signs, the district is endeavoring to attract more visitors. Scenic spots such as Guyi Garden and Malu Grape Park have already been elevated to 4A and 3A national-level tourism destinations. Zhouqiao scenic spot is also aiming to become a national 4A tourism destination.
