Painter seeks meaning of life in modern age

JIADING painter Wang Yi recently had a solo exhibition at Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy. It was his first show after he was enrolled as the painter of the academy.

The exhibition displayed about 50 works created during the past five years.

The artist says the "golden hour" for him to draw the pictures is after work from the office to the midnight, joking that he does not paint in the daytime.

Wang has spent dozens of years studying famous works created during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties and he has learned a lot in using the width of the brush, coloring and splash-ink.

His "Autumn Wind Blows through the South Mountain" is a prime example of how he combined an unpredictable painting style from the Yuan Dynasty (1206-1368) with the unique landscape style originated by Lu Yanshao (1909-1993), a Jiading native paining master, to create a boundless and elegant view of a mountain.

Meanwhile, "Bank of Xin'anjiang River" and "Village Morning" utilize a free style that gives feelings of quietness and relaxation. The trees, mountains, rivers and clouds all look so harmoniously combined in the picture. The lake looks beautiful and the mountain in the background is separated by clouds and fog. Critics say the overall effect is difficult to accomplish unless the artist is highly skilled.

For Wang, painting is not about making a living. Instead, it's a spiritual need to seek answers and meaning about life in the modern age. He has been strengthening China's cultural image through his mix of contemporary interpretations of traditional Chinese painting methods.Wang YiBorn in Shanghai in 1959, Wang Yi has held many important positions. He is the vice chairman of the Jiading District Committee of China's political advising body Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, chairman of the Jiading District Federation of Literature and Art, and vice director of the Jiading Bureau of Culture and Broadcasting.

Wang is also editor-in-chief of the magazines "Painting World" and "Study of Imperial Examination", the curator of Lu Yanshao Art Gallery, painter of the Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy, painter of Shanghai Academy of Calligraphy and Painting, a member of the China Artists Association and a council member of the Shanghai Artists Association.

Wang's works have appeared in many important exhibitions in the country and have won many awards since 1988. His "March in Snow" was awarded first prize in the nationwide contribution for the "Collection of Creative Paintings of Mao Zedong's Poems."

Meanwhile, some of his works such as "Shined by Flush of Dawn" and others have been collected by Mao Zedong Memorial Hall, Chen Yun Memorial Hall, Zhejiang Academy of Painting, as well as many museums, galleries and private collectors.

He also has published more than 400 works in foreign and domestic magazines and newspapers. He has traveled to Japan and Singapore to hold exhibitions and give lectures, and participated in the "Sino-American Excellent Art Works Show" in the United States.
