Paying tribute to vital body donors
Jiading District has seen more people agreeing to donate their bodies, as body donation has become more of a trend in modern times, where traditionally Chinese people believed that a body should be properly buried.
By the end of last year, the number of people registered for body and cornea donation had reached 1,642 in the district, with around 300 donations completed
The Jiading government pays the costs of donation for those over 60. People intending to donate can also enjoy free physical examinations and priority treatment at their family doctor’s.
Jiading volunteers attended a ceremony earlier this month to mark the 16th Shanghai Body Donation Day in Fushouyuan Cemetery in Qingpu District.
At the ceremony, tribute was paid to donors whose names were inscribed on the tombstones.
Lu Hongying, 49, a representative of donors’ families in Jiading, said she registered to donate her body in December last year following her parents’ donation.
“I respect my parents’ decision and my son respects mine,” Lu said.
Jiading Red Cross set up registration for body donation in 2001. Several people who registered were approached to start a service team, which was later named “Chuncan’s Home.” They have been assisting the service and management work for body donation.
Lu Xiuzhen, head of the voluntary organization, said body donations were significant for pathological research, education practice and clinical treatment.
Medical students can learn about human body while a piece of healthy cornea can help up to five people recover their sight.
Ge Jinxing and his wife were the first two in the district to sign up for donation. With his background in medical education, Ge always remembered how donated bodies helped him to learn.
“Management was insufficient in the past and some who intended to donate might eventually give up as no hospital responded to their requests,” Lu said. “But now we have put people to manage the donors in groups and provide information for those interested.”
Currently there are six hospitals and four eye banks in Shanghai that will receive body donations. The intended donors can choose any of the institutions and the kind of procedure they would like.
