Plants and animals thrive on Liudao
IN north Jiading, there is a wild life protected area called Liudao. It is close to the Liuhe River, and in Chinese dao means island, but actually it is not an island but an area with rivers enclosing it on three sides and looking like an island.
With an area of 67 hectares, Liudao was the only municipal wild animal habitat in Jiading named by Shanghai Wildlife Protection Station in 2009 due to its unique environment and rich variety of animals and plants.
There are more than 130 tree species, including camphor, privet, beech and paper mulberry trees in Liudao. These trees provide abundant berries and a good living environment for a variety of birds and animals.
According to a survey by Jiading Wildlife Protection Station, 118 animal species have been found in Liudao, including 98 species of birds, 6 types of mammals, 5 kinds of amphibians and 9 species of reptiles. Five of the species are listed as national second-level protected wild animals and more than 20 are included on the "List of terrestrial wildlife under national protection with important economic and scientific research value."
Liudao becomes more quiet the farther you walk from outside. By the river, there is a narrow path allowing you to walk into the woods.
Flowers bloom in the forest and you can hear birds singing. People can also see small holes on the sides of the bank. These are the homes of small freshwater crabs.
Driving route: Drive 15 kilometers along Jiahang Road from Jiading Town until reach the end.Surrounding catering services: Liudao Resort (128 Shuangliu Rd, Shuangtang Village, Huating Town): Accommodation and restaurant.Tanghang Restaurant (3138 Jiahang Highway, Huating Town): Farm-style cuisine.Maoqiao Village (1268 Shuangzhu Highway, Huating Town): Rural tours, including fruits and vegetables picking
Egrets return to Jiading
With the weather warming up, egrets started to migrate back to Jiading. On March 6, a group of 12 egrets flew back to the island in Shanghai Auto Expo Park.
With orange beaks and white feathers, these graceful birds attract a lot of attention from park visitors.
Thanks to the unusually warm weather, the egrets returned earlier than usual this spring, said an official from Jiading District Forestry Station.
He said the egrets were obviously tired after the long journey as they stood in tree branches quietly most of the time.
Blackbirds and ducks with green wings have also returned from the south. The birds create a magnificent scene when they fly along the surface of the lake and then suddenly soar into the sky. Address: 7001 Boyuan Rd
